Three „Weeks of Infinity“ in Europe – Wagner 2022

Day 4 – Hiding from 100F heat

Per weather forecast we are looking at a solid 97F peak today, but on my parent’s terrace it is 102F by noon, in the shadow. I am taking my father for a walk around the park where Otto Lilienthal did his flight experiments, and died here in an accident. An Ennio Morricone soundtrack is playing in my head as the gusty wind picks up dust into the air, the pollen is visible in the air, and I am expecting tumble weeds to roll by at any time. The heatwave Europe is experiencing comes with wildfires, one in Beelitz, south of Berlin, as close as 25 miles away from we are.

Lots of memories from this place come back – I used to play soccer here in impromptu matches between the trees. The longer section around the man-made mountain was part of my father’s and my jogging route when I was living at home. I used to attend the Highschool named “Otto Lilienthal Gymnasium” and often explain my friends in the US that are enamored by the Wright Brother’s, that they actually referenced Lilienthal’s work on gliding planes in their own work.

The trip down memory lane extends further when a friend of mine and I attend a Sunday afternoon BBQ with friends from my ballroom dancing day that I have literally not seen for 30 years. At the end of the evening catching up, watching old photos in an actual photo album, I am connected to many more that I lost touch with in a WhatsApp group. Technology is great 🙂
