Time for my Opera Friday. A new opera I have never seen and I made a reservation at Son & Garden, in walking distance to the civic center. As I pass the opening night gala set up of the symphony, I am reflecting that a parking ticket in advance was a great idea. A new opera and a new restaurant promise to be an adventure.
A line at Son & Garden? Hmm. Good thing that I have a reservation. The friendly host leads me to the bar two doors over. What a fun, hip atmosphere! The screen shows Balenziaga at Fashion Week while I am sipping my „Fifty Shades of Gray.“ Not sure what to expect. Looks hip 🙂
The cocktails are flat out amazing! The Wonderland is served on a garden reflecting the theme of Son & Garden.
We refuse to compromise on quality in our restaurant. That’s why we source our fresh ingredients from local farmers’ markets. No matter what time of year, you can be sure you’re eating the best of the season.

The lobster bisque is great, the branding as catch of the day is amazingly juicy. „I Love You Very Macha“ is a great variation of Tiramisu. Quite fun experience to kick of the night.

Off to the opera. So, composer John Adams is not the former president, apparently. It’s a new opera, commissioned for the centennial season that opens today for me. Who says opera is dead.
A Roman general and an Egyptian queen embark on a torrid romance, one that will disrupt alliances, end marriages, and spark a pitiless war that gives rise to a new leader, Caesar.

At the intermission, 90 minutes in, I am not too excited. No memorable arias except perhaps the last duet of Cleopatra and Anthony, the interlude leading to the fifth scene and a respectable scene depicting the big battle between Rome and Egypt. No memorable themes in the music.
