Some Like It Hot

A cold February night in NYC. This one is new to me, but the reviews were really great. So let‘s see!

We had planned to watch the movie in advance, but had to settle on some pre-reading as life caught up with us.

“Some Like It Hot” is a classic 1959 American comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. The film is set in the late 1920s and follows the story of two struggling musicians, Joe and Jerry, who witness a gangster murder and are forced to go on the run. To escape detection, they dress in drag and join an all-female jazz band headed to Miami.

While on the trip, Joe falls for the band’s singer, Sugar Kane, who is searching for a millionaire to marry. Meanwhile, Jerry finds himself pursued by a wealthy suitor who believes he is a woman. The two musicians struggle to keep up their disguises while navigating the complications of love and infatuation.

“Some Like It Hot” is known for its clever humor, sparkling performances, and its groundbreaking portrayal of cross-dressing characters. The film is widely considered to be one of the best comedies of all time and was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1991.

In addition to its comedic elements, the film also explores themes of gender and sexuality, and it is considered to be a cultural touchstone of the 1950s. Its enduring popularity and influence on pop culture can be seen in its numerous references in contemporary film and television.

Bottom line, “Some Like It Hot” is a timeless classic that offers a hilarious and thought-provoking commentary on love, desire, and the social norms of its time. Its memorable performances, clever writing, and iconic soundtrack make it a must-see for fans of classic Hollywood cinema.

The cross dressing part I remember from the reviews. It easily translates into gender awareness discussions of the 2020s. I am definitely excited to see the stage-musical adaptation.

It did not disappoint at all! Awesome music, gangster-approved dancing (you got to go to get it) and some stellar performances. Definitely well exceeded my expectations.
